British authorities has included eleven more destinations to its public warning list concerning the dangers of industrial alcohol poisoning from tainted alcoholic drinks.

This revised warning covers Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda following reports of "a global increase in the frequency of reported cases" of industrial alcohol toxicity.

Just a few weeks ago, officials had already included Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the existing roster, in response to multiple notable events such as the fatal loss of six visitors in Laos in 2024.

Travelers are being warned that even tiny quantities of toxic alcohol can lead to permanent eye damage or fatality within 12–48 hrs.

Exactly what is Methanol and How is it Utilized?

Industrial alcohol is a poisonous industrial alcohol often employed in antifreeze, car cleaning liquid, and thinner. It is not designed for ingestion.

Although it is inherently formed during the production of spirits, licensed producers bring it down to low, safe levels for human consumption through the distillation process.

Yet in some countries, it is surreptitiously added into beverages to save money, and as it is flavorless and smell-free, it is very difficult to identify.

Official Guidance for Travellers

Authorities official Hamish Falconer emphasized that all travellers should be aware of the symptoms of toxic alcohol toxicity.

"When you are having drinks overseas, stick to reputable establishments and refrain from unlicensed drinks or complimentary drinks," Falconer said.

"In case something feels off, for example a fatigue that's much more severe than usual or blurred eyesight – contact a doctor immediately."

The complete register of destinations listed as carrying a threat of industrial alcohol contamination presently covers: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
