Premier League News: Hannibal Suspended for Spitting; Guardiola Insists 'Back Line Has to Get Better'
In the latest top-flight developments, a significant midfielder was handed a significant ban, a manager has singled out a defender's mistakes to prove an argument, and the Manchester City manager has demanded backline improvements after a chaotic victory.
1. Mejbri Handed Four-Match Ban and Fine
The Clarets' midfielder Hannibal Mejbri was issued a four-match suspension and a £15,000 fine for improper behaviour during a recent match against Leeds United. The Football Association stated Mejbri was referred an independent disciplinary panel after allegations of spitting in the direction of visiting supporters at the 67-minute point during a 2-0 victory by Burnley.
An FA statement read: “An independent disciplinary panel has sanctioned the Hannibal Mejbri for misconduct during their Premier League match with Leeds on 18 October. The charge was that the player behaved against the laws of the game and/or in a poor manner and/or engaging in abusive and/or unacceptable behaviour by spitting towards the direction of Leeds United fans.”
It continued, “Mejbri subsequently admitted the allegation, and the Regulatory Commission imposed a four-game suspension and a fine after a hearing. The panel's written reasons for the sanction are to be released in due course.” The team, now in 19th place in the table, visit 12th-place Newcastle on Saturday.
Maresca Singles Out Tosin's Errors to Prove a Point
Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca has argued that not having experience is no an issue at team, highlighting how centre-back Tosin Adarabioyo's years did not prevent the 28-year-old from having a bad game in a 3-1 loss to Leeds United.
The Italian coach, who manages the youngest squad in the Premier League, rejected the idea that inexperience played a part in the poor result. He presented his case by criticising Tosin, Chelsea's most experienced player on the pitch, who delivered an error-strewn performance in central defence.
“People always talk about experience after we fail to win,” Maresca said. “After we defeated Barcelona, we drew with Arsenal, nobody was mentioning older personnel. I understand that when we lose, we are always looking for an explanation, but in my view the reason why we didn’t win to Leeds is not because of the experience, it was because we were not at our best.”
Maresca continued, “Who was the oldest one for us on the pitch? Who was? Did he play good? So, it isn't related to his age. It’s about those 11 players, they were simply not up to standard.”
3. Guardiola Says Defence 'Has to Improve'
Pep Guardiola has insisted his team have taken lessons from a midweek thriller against Fulham and the episode is now forgotten. City survived for a 5-4 victory in a remarkable encounter at Craven Cottage, after leading 5-1 with about an hour gone.
Coming after they fought off a fightback and won 3-2 in the prior game, prompting further doubts about whether they are resilient enough to sustain a title challenge to leaders Arsenal. “That game is behind us,” Guardiola commented. “Valuable lessons, I hope. At this level, for every team, one must learn from what happens in the good things and results and think of what's next.”
“Of course I’m concerned,” Guardiola added. “We are trying to understand what happened, to not allow the goals. With the three goals by Leeds, and five goals against Fulham it shows the two versions, correct? So, always we have done many positive things. Yet how many attempts did Leeds ? Three? Scored two. That ratio is bad. How many attempts for Fulham ? Five, six? So our ratio of chances conceded we can see is high. We must improve.”
4. Newcastle Prioritise New Livramento and Botman Deals
The Magpies' new sporting director, Ross Wilson, has made new deal discussions with key defenders Tino Livramento and Sven Botman at the top of his agenda at St James’ Park. Wilson joined after leaving Nottingham Forest in October and was pleased to learn midfielder Sandro Tonali is on a deal that runs until 2029 with an option until 2030.
This allows Wilson free to prioritise talks for Livramento and Botman's representatives. With the former’s current deal set to expire in 2027 and the latter’s in 2028, Newcastle's talks are being treated with some urgency.
“The initial few days after starting is when I found that Sandro’s contract situation was significantly more secure than the one I had thought,” he stated. “However, it is no secret that we would want to renew Tino’s deal and we would want to extend Sven Botman’s too. These talks are underway.”
Head coach Eddie Howe is missing Botman against the match with Burnley on Saturday, with the defender likely to remain sidelined for another week.
Nuno Confirms Paquetá Returns for West Ham
The Hammers' head coach Nuno Espírito Santo has confirmed that Lucas Paquetá is back to the starting lineup when the side face Brighton this Sunday, after serving his suspension following a sending-off against Liverpool.
“It is behind us,” Nuno said. “I am positive it will not happen again because he personally acknowledged the error. We discussed it about it in the dressing room. I am positive the matter is closed and it will not be repeated.”
Nuno also acknowledged the significant strain facing his team, currently 18th ahead of the weekend fixtures. “We cannot avoid it,” he admitted. “It's a reality. We must confront it. We're battling for survival. We cannot hide it.”
6. Arteta Pleased with No 9 Deputy Merino
Mikel Merino may keep his place as Arsenal’s central striker despite the club's usual strikers return from injury. The midfielder has been deployed as an emergency number nine because of injuries for Viktor Gyokeres, Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus.
He scored Arsenal’s first goal against Brentford before assisting Bukayo Saka for the second during a 2-0 victory which preserved {their|
